Is Gifting What You Give Away or What You Recieve?
By Robert Worstell
There is a concept that the giver receives more than the gift they give. What is a gift? It is something of value that you offer open-handedly, expecting nothing in return, and that you hope will improve the quality of life for the intended recipient. If you were to get something back, this would be a swap, barter, exchange, even commerce. Of course, "good manners" says that you have gifts to give to all your guests in return. But again, these return-gifts are also not estimated on the basis of what gift you are expecting. The point of gifting, then, is what? To improve the quality of life of those you contact. To help and assist them in someway without expecting any return. And if you look this over carefully, this is actually one of the noblest activities humankind enters into. Let's look at the Golden Rule. As you treat others, so are you treated. Or: You get only as you give. By open-handed gifting, what are you working at - what is the point? Improving quality of life. The point of openhanded is that you are improving the whole of humanity's existence, even on a very small scale. Because you won't necessarily get any direct return on that gift. But you will get a return at some point. Because the Golden Rule is inexorable - always on, like that battery-powered bunny in the ads. The more you give away, the more you are working to improve life around us all. So, thanks. What you just did is incredibly appreciated. See how that works? See how that feels? If you wanted to take this right on out, then you might consider that you give of your own time to help people. Free of charge, and the more unexpected, the better. Even the people who "live" off of other people's charity or government handouts will improve their lives through your actions. And of course, the more openhanded you give, the more effective the gift. Because that is how you would like to be treated. Try it and see.
Dr. Robert C. Worstell produces prolific output while living and operating a working farm in Missouri. Having published over 4 dozen books, numerous articles, whitepapers, presentations and videos, his current book about Levenson releasing techniques has a working title of "Freedom Is - (period.)" and scheduled for early summer release. Meanwhile, he's busy running the farm and improving the quality of his grassfed beef cattle and general farming operations.

Contributor's Note
Gifting is nearly as old as the Golden Rule, if they weren't thought up simultaneously. The Golden Rule, in some form or another, exists in every religion and philosophy in our history - even before it was written down.
